5 years ago, a significant IT foot print could have filled an entire rack cabinet. 3 years ago, that same foot print could have filled a half cabinet. Since colocation pricing is based on space, the smaller space you need, the less you pay.


By outsourcing your entire environment to a data center facility you limit your infrastructure of the office to just a Point-to-Point internet circuit, or a WAN circuit with VPN appliance. Secure Your Data In 2010 - Why A Firewall Isn't Enough

Computer network consultants around town received calls from clients who wondered if their organization might become the next victim. Unfortunately when it comes to viruses, it may be too late. Understanding the Importance of the PCI Data Security Standard

PCI Data Security Standard is a worldwide information security standard assembled by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). The PCI Data Security Standard applies to all organizations that hold or process cardholder information from American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, and Visa branded credit and debit cards. The PCS standard was designed to ensure that companies apply rigorous procedures and systems to protect cardholder data from theft. All companies who accept these credit cards, regardless of their size, must adhere to the PCI DSS requirements, but larger merchants must also go through a third party audit by a Qualified Assessor to verify that the 12 requirements that make up the PCD DSS are met.

One of the PCI Data Security Standards (8.3) requires multi-factor authentication for remote access to networks and systems where credit card data is stored or processed. Multi-factor authentication requires an additional factor be used to verify a user’s identity. In most cases, a username and password are the first method. With multi-factor authentication, a second method of authentication is required.

For instance when you call your bank in order to obtain you balance and you are asked for a PIN or personal information that only you should know, such as the name of your favorite movie or your mother’s maiden name, multi-factor authentication is being put into play. Rather than using only a single form of authentication, multi-factor authentication requires the addition of multiple factors to prove the authenticity of the caller. Asking the caller to provide multiple pieces of information, like their account number and PIN or their account number and the answer to a secret question, is better than using just one piece of information to verify the identity of the user. However, multi-factor authentication is best when you combine two different types of authentication. An example is using a physical device like an ATM card in conjunction with a secret like a PIN. Other examples of multifactor authentication involve using a security token or fob in conjunction with a username and password. These methods offer stronger security by requiring both something you know and something you have to authenticate.

Many websites have accounts for users that require web authentication. This may require the input of additional personal information to authenticate who you are so you can obtain access to your online account. With password phishing attacks on the rise, requiring multi-factor authentication for websites can really help protect against identity theft and fraud.

Explaining Web Hosting Bandwidth and Data Transfer Allowance

In the most simple of terms an analogy using water flowing through pipes gives the easiest explanation of bandwidth, the wider the pipes (i.e. higher bandwidth) the more water can be moved per second (or data).

So Bandwidth is the amount of data passage per second and is generally measured in Gbps (Gigabits per second).

It is easy to confuse bandwidth, i.e. the speed of your connection with data transfer allowance, which is the amount of data that can be transferred to and from your server or web site per month and is measured in Gb. Most web hosts actually incorrectly use the term bandwidth in place of data transfer allowance, and it is important when choosing a web host, or a web hosting plan that you have a rough idea of the amount data transfer you will require.

Put simply each time somebody looks at a page from your site they download that page from your server, using up some of your data transfer allowance, if your average page size is 100kb and each of your 100 visitors a day looks at say 4 pages then per day you are using 40Mb which equates to a data transfer of 1.2Gb per month. Unfortunately customers visiting your site are not the only ones to use up your data transfer, sending and receiving email, uploading new pages to your server, and believe it or not GoogleBot, MSN Bot and the Yahoo! Robot to name but a few of the countless spiders out there, all use up a portion of your data transfer depending on how many of your pages they spider. In-fact the various web spiders out there can use up a significant amount of your data transfer especially when it is in it’s infancy as they attempt to categorise it for production in organic search results sometimes spidering your web site up to 10 times a day. There are various types and methods of data encryption. Some of the most popular forms of data encryption include single file encryption, folder encryption, volume encryption, whole disk encryption, and of course email encryption.

The Windows XP operating system has the ability to perform file and folder encryption. There are 3rd party tools, like PGP Desktop, which can perform whole disk, logical disk, file, and e-mail encryption.

If you routinely deal with confidential or sensitive information, or if you are concerned about private information falling into someone else's hands, encryption may be the way you want to go. However, there are a few things you should be aware of so you don't have a false sense of security.

First, What Is Data Encryption

Throughout ancient and modern history people have come up with ways to mask, hide, and verify that information is secure or valid. For instance; the ancient Babylonians in 4000 B.C. used something call intaglio, a process in which images and writing were carved or etched into stone that identified certain Babylonian merchants when they were trading. Each trader, or merchant, had a specific intaglio to make his mark, this way his customers would know that what they were purchasing belonged to, or was produced by, a specific merchant. This is a bit different then encryption, more like today's digital signature, another process typically part of data encryption.

Encryption today is much more advanced and complex. It is used for everything from securing military secrets to keeping intellectual property confidential. There are various forms of encryption techniques, some stronger or more secure than others. In it's basic form, encryption can be thought of as the masking, or the scrambling of original human readable information. The person who is masking the information must provide the person he is sending the information to with some sort of key that allows them to unscramble the information so they can make sense of it. For instance; I use encrypted e-mail messages so I can correspond with my customers on a regular basis. I do this because during certain types of projects my customers and I discuss private information such as security holes discovered during security assessments. This type of information is obviously not something we would want to fall into someone else's hands.

Most Data Does Not Start Out Encrypted So Be Careful
----------------------------
The primary reason I am writing this article is to point out a couple specific issues with data encryption. During a recent discussion with a friend of mine he told me that he was using Windows XP folder encryption to secure some of his confidential information. He asked me if I thought this was a secure method of storing important documents. My response was yes and no. The data encryption used by Windows XP is relatively secure, but the issue is that the majority of the data that is now encrypted in the folder did not start out that way.

Let's take for example, a word document that contains your personal financial information. You may have written this document so you have a central location where account numbers, social security numbers, and other private and individual identification information is easily retrievable. After you are finished writing the document, you then transferred it to your secure encrypted folder. Since it is now in a secure folder, only you are able to access it because only you know the pass-phrase that was used to generate the encryption key. For the most part, this assumption is correct.

While you were writing that document, you probably hit the save button several times. Or if you are like me, many times. I've lost lengthy documents several times in the past and have trained myself to hit the save button pretty frequently. Every time you hit the save button, a new temporary version of the file is created. This is typically saved in the c:\documents and settings\"profile name"\local settings\temp directory. This is done for recovery and undue purposes. For instance, if you make a mistake while writing the document and need to undue your actions, one of these temp files may be used to undue the action. Also, if your system or application crashed while writing the document, you can recover it from the temp files stored in this directory. You may have had to go through this before and it works very well.

Now that you have finished your document and copied or moved it to the secure folder, your document is secure, right? Wrong. Chances are the temporary files in your temp directory are still there. Even if you were to delete them, there is a significant chance they can be recovered using open source or very inexpensive undelete or data recovery software. If someone where to get hold of your computer, hard drive, or gain remote access to your system somehow, there is a significant chance the unencrypted original version of your document can be located. So what can you do to make sure that your encrypted version of your file and data is the only version. There is not a clear or 100% secure answer to this question but I will share with you how I deal with the issue.

Changing The Location Of Unencrypted Temp Files
----------------------------------------------------------
The primary way applications like Microsoft Word determine where to store temporary versions of your files is by looking at two user environment variables. One called "tmp" and one called "temp". Right clicking on “my computer” can access them, choose properties, then choose the "advanced" tab and click "environment variables". Here you can edit or change the default location for temporary files. One thing I have to point out is even though a large number of software packages use these locations for temporary storage, it will be hard to determine if they all do or if they save temp files in other locations. You will have to do a little investigating to determine where various applications store their temp files. On my system, I have changed these variables to point to an encrypted disk where I store my encrypted data and files. This way, I can be reasonably sure that temporary or working versions of the files are also encrypted.

Encrypted Files May Not Stay Encrypted When Copied or Moved
-----------------------------------------------
Another thing you should be aware of is what happens to encrypted files or folders when they are copied or moved to another location. If a file or folder that has previously been encrypted is copied or moved to another Windows NTFS partition or volume, the encryption is preserved (under most circumstances). However, if you move or copy the encrypted data to volume or partition that is not NTFS, the file is automatically decrypted. Also, just because a file is encrypted on your hard disk it does not mean that this file will be encrypted when you e-mail it to someone. E-mail encryption is a totally different procedure. Also, keep in mind that encrypted files are decrypted when they are transmitted over a network connection.

Make Sure Deleted Unencrypted Files Are Really Gone
---------------------------------------------------
Because data that is deleted from disk may be recoverable for quite some time, I use another procedure to limit or reduce the risk of this possibility. As I mentioned earlier, data that has been deleted can in many cases be easily recovered using off the shelf software. In order to be reasonably sure deleted data is not easily recoverable, you need to write over that portion of the disk where the file and it's fragments were located. Actually, you most likely need to do this multiple times just to be sure the data is unrecoverable. The PGP Desktop software I use to create encrypted file systems, send encrypted e-mail, and create encrypted zip files also has a tool called "Wipe Free Space". This tool will write random patterns of data to all space on a drive that is flagged as free. You can tell the software how many times to perform this procedure but the default it usually three passes. My primary system performs this task every night. This way I can be reasonably sure the unencrypted versions of my encrypted files are not just sitting around waiting to be recovered.

Conclusion
----------
If you are concerned about keeping important data confidential, file, folder, or disk encryption is a good solution. If configured properly you can be reasonably sure that your private information will remain private. Just remember that most data does not start out encrypted and that remnants of the original information may still exist in an unencrypted state. There are many options with regard to data encryption; Windows XP native file and folder encryption, open source encryption solutions, or commercial encryption solutions such as PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Data Security - 3 Tips to Keep Your Data Safe

Most of us who work with computers (which, these days, would include just about everyone) have built our lives around these machines. Our entire identies - confidential letters, emails, sensitive spreadsheets, documents, presentations, pictures, etc. are stored on our computers. Despite the enormous amount of personal data stored on our computers, few of us take the time to actually keep it protected and safe. Here are a few tips to help you get started on this path:


1. Backup Your FilesIdeally, you should have two backups of your data: a local backup through an external hard drive, and a remote backup online. You should keep a copy of pretty much everything on your computer on an external hard drive - a mirror image of your system. In addition, you should keep an additional copy of your most important files in an online backup service. These services, which number into dozens (though you should pick the most reputed ones, such as the ones offered by Microsoft, Box.net, etc.) not only give remote access to your files, but also protect them from loss, theft, or hacking.


2. Adequately Protect Your ComputerDo you have an anti-virus installed? If yes, do you regularly update it with the latest anti-virus definitions? How often do you scan your computer for threats? What about anti-spyware/malware? Do you have software that automatically, and actively protects you against malicious websites or software?
These are some of the questions you must answer if you want to protect your computer adequately. It is frightening to find so many people still without a proper anti-virus software on their computer. Don't make this mistake: protect your computer from external threats as much as you can.


3. Be Wary of TheftsThis may sound trivial, but make sure that you take all precautions to protect your computer from being stolen. While desktop computers are obviously much harder to steal that laptops, the latter can be easily picked up by anyone if you keep them unsupervised. Never keep your laptop unsupervised in a visible location (such as a car or coffee shop). Nowadays, you can get security software that will not only lock your data in case of theft, but also help you find it through GPS tracking. If you travel frequently, or are in a habit of using your laptop outdoors, it is recommended that you install such software on your system.

DHS deploying the wrong weapons in cyberwar

Siobhan Gorman, writing at the Wall Street Journal tells us that a report from Richard Skinner, DHS Inspector General, will be presented to Congress today.  The report highlights troubles at US-CERT in particular turnover in leadership and severe understaffing.



The problem is not with US-CERT's administration it is with their impossible mission. There appears to be some belief within DHS and the inspector general's office that the secret Einstein project is somehow going to improve cyber security.  Pointing fingers at slow deployment and lack of information dissemination is ignoring a more fundamental problem.



The Einstein project, authorized under the still classified portions of the Bush Administration's Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI), is a plan to deploy Intrusion Detection sensors (IDS) at all of the government's Internet gateways.



Even if US-CERT was fully staffed with three shifts to monitor and report on the alerts Einstein generated, even if all of the sensors were deployed, even if all of the information were distributed to every department and agency within DHS, the US would not be able to fight cyber attacks.



Let's review. IDS is a technology invented over 15 years ago. It is signature based which means it relies on a massive collection of snippets of text and code that researchers have discovered over the years are associated with unwanted network traffic, be it worms, port scans, or intrusions. Because the original deployments of IDS were just passive data collectors there was no impact on network performance from adding new signatures so the data base grew and grew and the logs IDS generated grew and grew to the point where even a mid-size organization would receive millions of alerts a day.  IDS log management became a major problem that gave birth to two industries. Security Event Information Management (SEIM) and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSP).  SEIM productsfrom companies like Arcsight attempt to prioritize alerts so that security personnel can focus on just the important events. MSSPs (Symantec, SecureWorks, BT) use SEIM products to make it even easier for a customer to handle the flood of alerts their IDS generates.  To make the claim that they are effective MSSPs staff their SOCs (Secure Operations Centers) around the clock.  US-CERT has been tasked with becoming the MSSP for DHS.



But do you see the problem here? The only tool in DHS's chest is a monitoring tool.  Millions of alerts have to be filtered down. The continuous port scans, the worm traffic, the DDoS attacks, have to be winnowed down to something actionable. And even if that were possible, attacks such as those seen by Google, the Dalai Lama's office, and the Pentagon, would still be effective. I have been beating this drum since 2003 when I visited the Pentagon and in no uncertain terms informed them that they were wasting their money on IDS. The ensuing public debate was well covered by the media but must have been missed by the framers of the CNCI.

Einstein is a waste of money and a distraction. Other than generating huge reports that highlight the levels of attacks targeting DHS it will do nothing to protect DHS networks. There have been a lot of advances in network security technology since 2003.  It is time for DHS to get serious about security.
