Network Troubleshooting Tips

Posted on 05:29 by Unknown

In simple terms, a network is a collection of computers and other (communication) devices that are connected facilitating communication and sharing of resources. Networks are classified on various criteria including but not limited to method of connection, scale, network architecture and network topology. Some of the most popular types of networks are; personal area network (PAN), local area network (LAN), home area network (HAN), campus network, office area network (OAN), wide area network (WAN), global area network (GAN), enterprise private network (EPN), virtual private network (VPN), internetwork, and overlay network. If you are a network manager, you will have to undertake network troubleshooting at one time or another. Following are some simple tips that will assist you in this task;

• Mark Moroses, Senior Director, Technical Services and Security Officer at Maimonides Medical Center in New York terms a formal inventory of computers/workstations and servers, instrumental in identifying root cause of the problem. Two of the easiest and most popular softwares to assist you in this task are Bindview's NETinventory and Tally Systems' TS Census.

• Network diagramming software helps identify (critical) communication links between network equipment. Experts recommend using Microsoft's Visio 2003 for chalking out the physical configuration of a network.

• Device polling system is a software that periodically checks devices on the network (such as servers, laptops, printers, etc) for connectivity. It reduces lead time in identifying or reporting the problem making it easier for IT staff to correct it.

• Application logs provide a history of process errors detailing when a process was halted and why. Used in combination with network device logs, they can assist Network Managers in identifying faults.

• As mentioned, network device logs for laptops, printers, routers and switches can reduce lead time for diagnosing a problem. When configuring the network, it is a good idea to configure the system in such a way that all logs are sent to the server making it easier for the Managers to identify the problems.

• Using various softwares such as Microsoft Excel to establish trends in system and application logs will help Network Managers to identify cyclical trends in problems, if any.

• A remote control tool is an ideal solution for companies having offices and thus networks spread over a wide geographical area since it allows checking problems, patching and reconfiguring remote devices and workstations remotely. This reduces lead time for resolving problems and improves effectiveness and efficiency of both equipment and staff. Some of the most popular remote control tools recommended by experts are Symantec's PCAnywhere, Funk Software's Proxy, VNC (Virtual Network Computing) and CrossTec's NetOp Remote Control.

• A software and hardware based protocol analyzer will be your best defense against complicated problems since such issues will be hard to identify without packet level information. Experts recommend using the following software and hardware based protocol analyzers; Finisar's XGig Analyzer Suite, the Ethereal protocol analyzer and Flukes OptiView Protocol Expert.

Importance of Network Security

Posted on 05:30 by Unknown

Since more group are logging on top of the Internet everyday, Network Security becomes a superior spring. Taking part in the United States, identity theft and supercomputer fraud are amongst the fastest rising crimes. It is weighty to shield your group and ensure the safety of all computers and users in with the purpose of group.

What is a Network?

Taking part in order to fully understand group security, solitary be obliged to firstly understand what did you say? Exactly a group is. A group is an assembly of computers with the purpose of is connected. Computers can be connected in a variety of ways. Some of these ways include a USB seaport, phone line connection, Ethernet connection, or a wireless connection. The Internet is basically a group of networks. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is plus a group. When a supercomputer connects to the internet, it joins the ISP’s group which is together with a variety of other networks, which are together with even more networks, and so on. These networks all take in the Internet. The vast amount of computers on the Internet, and the come to of ISPs and copious networks makes group security a be obliged to.

Common Network Security Breeches

Hackers often try to hack into vulnerable networks. Hacker’s employment a variety of altered attacks to cripple a group. Whether you control a back home group or a LAN, it is weighty to know how hackers will attack a group.

One collective way in support of a hacker to do havoc is to pull off access to things with the purpose of ordinary users shouldn’t control access to. Taking part in a few group, administrators control the knack to promote to convinced parts of the group “unauthorized access.” If a hacker is able to profit access to a protected area of the group, he or she can perhaps affect all of the computers on the group. Some hackers attempt to break into convinced networks and make available viruses with the purpose of affect all of the computers in the group. Some hackers can plus look at in a row with the purpose of they are not rumored to see to it that.

Destructive Attacks

There are two major categories in support of destructive attacks to a group. Data Diddling is the firstly attack. It as a rule is not the minute visible with the purpose of something is unsuitable with your supercomputer what time it has been subjected to a data diddler. Data diddlers will by and large trade records or annals to some extent, and the impairment becomes visible much soon after. Once a catch is bare, it can be very challenging to trust a few of your preceding data as the culprit might control potentially fooled with many altered credentials.

The go along with type of data destruction is outright deletion. Some hackers will simply hack into a supercomputer and delete essential annals. This as anticipated causes major problems in support of a few problem and can even have an advantage to a supercomputer being deemed useless.

The Importance of Network Security

Knowing how destructive hackers can be shows you the meaning of Network Security. Most networks control firewalls enabled with the purpose of bar hackers and viruses. Having anti-virus software on all computers in a group is obliged to. Taking part in a group, all of the computers are connected, so with the purpose of if solitary supercomputer gets a virus, all of the other computers can be adversely affected by this same virus. Any group administrator is supposed to control all of the essential annals on back up disks. If a parade is deleted by a hacker, but you control it on back up, so therefore in attendance is veto spring. When annals are lost forever, major problems ensue. Network security is a weighty phenomenon in support of a problem, or a back home. Hackers try to promote to people’s lives challenging, but if you are keen in support of them, your group will be safe.

Diameter Protocol - Securing Your Network

Posted on 05:30 by Unknown

span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman";">A secure way of sharing network services and resources is through the implementation of protocols. Diameter protocol is an application suite widely used in network solutions involving Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA). It was ideally designed after the RADIUS with improve features that were known to be limitations of the older version. The protocol was designed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for purposes of secure remote network and IP mobility.

Diameter protocol offers backwards compatibility with RADIUS for easy migration of applications created to work with the older protocol. The development of diameter protocol was made due to the increasing demand for network computing that old AAA protocols such as TACACS and RADIUS are longer applicable for use; complex implementations such as requirements for DSL, Mobile IP, wireless connections, and other known forms of network access connections.

Diameter protocol is currently used by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a new protocol to handle AAA related functions and with IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) management. The advantages of using this protocol include error notification which is not offered by RADIUS and the addition of commands and attribute value pairs (AVP's) for encapsulating diameter information.

Several companies are offering their products to developers for integration with their applications. This includes the OpenBloX and OpenBloX J2EE which are pioneered by Traffix Systems and was made as benchmarks by other companies developing similar applications. OpenBloX is an open source package available in pure C++ and Java in conformity with standards set by 3GPP and 3GPP2. Because of its effectiveness in supporting IMS diameter interfaces such as Ro, Rf, Cx, CC, and Gx, at present there are 65 vendors using the package with their NGN and IMS application development.

The addition of their OpenBloX J2EE made Traffix Solutions even more popular in the Diameter solutions industry. The new OpenBloX J2EE offers support for application servers running J2EE. The product was made possible after the company partnered with IBM to develop diameter solutions to support IBM's Websphere application and several other applications running J2EE.

OpenBloX J2EE is capable of running under systems supporting J2EE and SOA. Another application server supported by OpenBloX J2EE is the GlassFish that was developed by Sun Micro Systems. This product allows developers to design and create more robust application such as payment and billing systems that can run under J2EE application servers.

The solutions provided by Traffix Systems through their diameter solutions allow users to take advantage of services such as WiFi, WiMAX, and other similar connections. Several other solutions such as the Rosetta Diameter Solutions and Prism Diameter Load Balancera are available on the company's official website. The adaptability of their applications to several diameter interfaces makes them the best choice for telecommunication companies.

If you are looking for more information related to diameter stack then feel free to visit diameter protocol from TraffixSystems.Com.

Bandwidth Management Is A Nice Way To Control Traffic Over The Network And Hence Work As A Traffic Shaper

Posted on 04:28 by Unknown

The use of the Internet is increasing these days. More and more people use the internet for the purpose of emails, downloading videos, uploading pictures, listening to music, for social networking, chatting, for blogging, for research work, for exploring different countries of the world, and in short for most of the day to day taks/works and requirements. The Internet’s link has a specified capacity that is given to your part of the network. One can not and must not use the capacity more than that as there may be many chances of overflow. This overflow results in the congestion of the network, on which many users are downloading at the same time. They are demanding certain bandwidth all the time and hence the network is not available for other users. Bandwidth management is a process in which the bandwidth that carries traffic over network is optimized. Here a bandwidth limit is applied to the network which is used as a traffic shaper over that particular network. This results in a network which has no congestion in it.

Bandwidth is the amount of the data that is transferred over a network in a specified period of time. This bandwidth can be controlled by the bandwidth management tools which are often called the packet or traffic shaper. Networks having bandwidth limiter are easier to use, as there is no congestion or blockage of the bandwidth by one person or computer over the network.

A congested network usually decreases your business critical performance. As you can not get the amount of bandwidth you require to carry out the business critical tasks. For example if you have to upload some video, or have to do video conferencing with the other members of your business who are in different places, and you do not get sufficient amount of bandwidth then it will cause you a lot of problems. Your much precious time would be wasted and your business will suffer a monetary loss. Many softwares for bandwidth management are readily available in the market today that helps in limiting the bandwidth over the network. Due to these softwares the efficiency, performance and speed of your network increases. A bandwidth limit is given to each user over the network, in which the amount of bandwidth to be used by that user/computer is specified.

Bandwidth management includes traffic shaping, congestion avoidance, scheduling algorithm, and also bandwidth reservation algorithms and bandwidth reservation protocols. These softwares work as traffic shaper, as they are shaping the overall traffic over the network. Bandwidth management also limitizes every user’s bandwidth consumption on a network, increases the efficiency and performance of your network, and also protects your network from hanging up.

Bandwidth management software works as a bandwidth limiter and helps restrict users from accessing everything over the network. Many users have certain bandwidth requirements and not everyone need a lot of bandwidth over the network. Only those people who demand more bandwidth are given this.

The most likely problem which can occur while running a large network setup in any business is the control of traffic in your network. The control of traffic in a network to avoid traffic congestion and monitoring connections is known as bandwidth management. To handle the network pressures in an apposite way, it is very significant to select the most feasible mechanism for bandwidth management. There are different bandwidth management mechanisms to control the traffic in a network. These mechanisms help to shape traffic, prevention of network overloading, rate control and schedule algorithms. One solution for controlling the network traffic is thought to be the increase in bandwidth, but actually that is an ineffective and costly solution. Increasing the bandwidth is quite expensive, so you must adopt the methods which can utilize the bandwidth economically and optimally.

If you are the owner of a business where you face the issues of network management, then you should look for the optimal methods to control network traffic and manage the bandwidth. A very practical and effective solution designed to resolve this issue is the utilization of bandwidth management software commonly known as bandwidth manager. Bandwidth management software uses different algorithms which assign bandwidth preference to the traffic and allocate more bandwidth to the high precedence traffic. This assignment helps in controlling the download and upload rate of a network. The bandwidth is managed at the server side and the hence the usage of bandwidth manager offers a qualitative management of traffic without the constraint of any special hardware.

Antamedia bandwidth manager is an excellent tool which serves as an application accelerator, a network load balancer, and a firewall with a real-time service delivery. Antamedia bandwidth manager has the ability to shape and control the traffic in an efficient manner. This bandwidth manager can help the ISPs and companies to provide satisfactory service to their customers and hence increase their business integrity. Further to this, the bandwidth management software can prove useful in the highly congested environment of net cafes by managing their bandwidth in an optimal manner. With the help of this software, you can also specify the speed for internet users and can set the data transfer package. Moreover, you can provide the time limit for data package usage. It also authenticates the users who have been provided with specific data packages.

Antamedia bandwidth manager provides many advanced features which makes it different from other bandwidth management softwares. Some of these features are the true bandwidth management by kilobyte, statistics report generation, timer settings, real time monitoring of clients, time-based and volume-based services and easy deployment with the need of only two network cards.

Voice-Data Network Solution - What To Consider Besides Bandwidth And Cost

Posted on 04:36 by Unknown

When you are deciding on a voice/data network solution for your business the obvious factors to take into consideration are bandwidth and cost. However if you base your entire solution on those factors alone you risk facing issues you could have easily prevented with just a bit more strategic thought and planning.

The article "Why Do Businesses Prefer T1 And T3 Bandwidth Connections" is a good attempt at addressing the business issues involved with the decision making process for a small or medium business with limited telecommunications / network connectivity needs.

But that is just a start.

For businesses, with more than rudimentary network connectivity needs, there really is much much more involved in driving these kinds of decisions. Also, there are several more technology options beyond T1/T3 (aka DS1/DS3) and xDSL. It's also important to understand that Bandwidth and cost, while important, are rarely the only drivers of solutions in this space.

The driver for solutions here is business problems.

What does your business need?

High volume public and/or private network throughput? Robust Availability with Substantial SLA (Service Level Agreement) guarantees? International reach? Flexibility? Cost Effectiveness? Consistent product/feature availability within a given geographic region? etc.

If a business' telecommunications needs are:

5 or less locations with Email, Web surfing and ~20 phones lines or less....than xDSL, Cable or a Mixed Services (integrated) Local DS1 are all on the table as options.

For larger businesses that may have a need for private connectivity between branch locations, to maintain a call center, host internet or external partner facing servers, or in anyway depend on network connectivity as part of their revenue stream...... xDSL or Cable are rarely options.

Businesses in this category need the reliability and "known quantity" of telco services, that tend to leverage DS1, DS3, OC3/12 etc as local access, as a component of availability of their larger solution. Additionally Metro Optical and Ethernet solutions, where available, are increasingly more cost effective and flexible alternatives to copper and SONET based local access services.

The bottom line when working through a decision on a voice/data network for your business is to look beyond just bandwidth and cost. You must also consider the requirements and impact for your existing AND future applications, infrastructure, volume, network stability, security/privacy, partner/customer interface, and supplier connectivity. Ensuring all these factors are considered will ensure your solution addresses all possible business requirements....... and prevents the potential for embarrasing or frustrating issues in the future.

Bandwidth and Network Management

Posted on 04:28 by Unknown

Bandwidth management also known as Network Management Bandwidth or Network Bandwidth Management is the technique to measure and control communications on network link that may result in congestion of network and inadequate performance.

Bandwidth management is frequently used synonym for data-transfer. Data-transferring rate is the rate at which a specific amount of data can be taken from a single point to the other during the specified time limit. This type of bandwidth usually is expressed in bps or bits per second. Very rarely, it is expressed in Bps (Bytes per second).

A modem, which operates at 57,600 bps is having double the bandwidth and rate of modem, which operates at 28,800 bps. A link having greater bandwidth is capable of carrying sufficient information for sustaining the progression of pictures in any video presentation.

An actual communication path normally comprises of a link succession with every link having its private bandwidth.

Network tuning and network performance management are some of the terms used for Network Optimization. It is a unique linear programming framework model. In fact, network models have three merits over the linear programming framework model.

1.       Quick to solve: Problems with linear program having 30,000 columns and 1000 rows are solved very quickly. It grants that network models need to be included in various applications including real-time making of decision.

2.       Natural solution to integers: By realizing that problems can be designed as network program, solving special kinds of integer plans becomes easy.

3.       Intuitive in nature: Network models offer a language to talk about problems, which are intuitive when compared to variables, constraints, and objective language of integer and linear programming.

Network managers are constantly searching for smart Enterprise network management solutions that will make their job easier and more manageable. Enterprise network management services are offered by communication Companies that specializes in providing with these solutions and maintaining them for long-term periods.

Posted on 05:32 by Unknown

Building  a computer network design calls in for great deal of efforts and time. If you  are willing to give in both then these easy steps mentioned below will help you  to put together a great network design:

First step involves noting down computer network requisites. Work out how much       bandwidth will be needed for different applications. Also keep in mind network       delay and packet loss.
The next step is to map out security needs of every application. Make policies regarding       network access and updation of stored data.
Once this is done then create profiles for every network user. It would be good if you       could categorize users. Depending upon the need you can assign bandwidth       for every category.
Then spot the position of every network user. You can use coloured dots for this       purpose.
Check out if each floor has the required wiring. If not then arrange for the wiring       immediately.
After this is over the next thing is to measure the switching apparatus. Assign one       switch for every single user of your network.
The next step involves the process of estimating the flow of traffic. After you know the quantity voice usage needed then using an Erlang calculator determine the number of voice channels needed.
Then you have to do the task of sizing the data links. A service level agreement should be discussed with your internet company to meet the bandwidth needs.
Depending on your budget you can either go in for a virtual private network or VPN or get lease lines for your network.
Once all the above steps are carried out your network design should be functional.

I hope you will be able to build an  incredible computer network design using these easy instructions. To achieve  impeccability make sure you use only measured information and know your users  and their requirement aptly.

Act now to address your compromised networks

Posted on 18:44 by Unknown

It is increasingly evident that even the most secure environments are compromised.  While the successful penetrations might not be targeted in all cases there are enough incidents now public  to indicate the extent of the present danger. Every organization should revisit their security plans based on a new assumption: that their enterprise is already compromised and that their data is being exfiltrated.

Consider just these few incidents taken from a Heritage Foundation report published in 2008.
I am not stressing the China factor here only the loss of data and the methods used.

Titan Rain.  In 2004 Shawn Carpenter discovered significant amounts of data from government research labs, NASA, and defense organizations residing on servers outside the United States.
United Kingdom. Throughout December 2005, British Parliament offices were surreptitiously penetrated, also from computers using the Guangdong network. Britain's National infrastructure Security Coordination Center investigators told reporters, "These were not normal hackers.... The degree of sophistication was extremely high. They were very clever programmers." Some of the attacks targeted files in British government offices that deal with human rights issues.
The Trojan e-mail attacks targeted specific victims. "One email was targeted at one company in aviation. It was a Word document that had a Math/ cad component. If you did not have math/cad on your computer it would not open," said one expert. "The point was to find documents that had been written in that particular program and then send them back.(McAfee whitepaper )

Taiwan. According to an official of Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, in 2006, Taiwan detected 13 PLA zero-day attacks launched within Microsoft applications and experienced a total of 178 days of vulnerability between notifying Microsoft of the attacks and receiving the appropriate patches. One PowerPoint-based attack was so sophisticated that it took Microsoft engineers over two months to construct a patch.
Spring 2007, a program was discovered at a foreign coast guard agency that systematically searched for documents that had shipping schedules, then forwarded them to an e-mail address in China, according to David Rand, chief technology officer of Trend Micro

And more recently we have seen the extent of the network of infiltrated machines specifically targeting organizations that impact Tibet-China relations as documented by research teams at the University of Toronto and SecDev in their GhostNet report.   Techniques that look remarkably like those used to traget Rio-Tinto, the Autralian mining giant.

The methodologies employed in these wide spread attacks is typically the combination of new  vulnerabilities and custom Trojan horses delivered over the web or through email. This January’s revelation that Google and dozens of other companies had succumbed to such attacks was a wakeup call for industry, the US State Department, and now Congress, which is responding with  legislation to address the issue.

APT and Cybersecurity
What should you be doing to address the presence of compromised internal resources?   While Data Leak Prevention attempts to provide an overlay of classification, network monitoring, and end point management (for USB devices), there is another approach that uses advanced agents on the desktop that continuously check for abnormal behavior that is indicative of root kits and custom Trojans.  I just posted a white paper on such a technology that is coupled with forensics tools from Guidance Software.  By identifying, disabling, and repairing infected machines you will engage in a constant battle against the enemy within.  But at least you will have a weapon for that battle instead of flying blind and trusting to ineffective AV, IDS, and firewalls.
